Instructional for watching and controlling Virgin Media Tivo TV around the home.
We carry out these TV distribution works often for domestic customers but may be possible as a nice DIY home AV project.
Many people use Sky magic eyes to control and watch Sky TV in another room, by combining the Sky signal with the installed TV aerial feed and distributing around the home.
When switching to Virgin Media they want that same functionality. Virgin Media do not advertise this option and may tell you its not possible, actually its easy and pretty cheap.
Remote viewing Virgin Media in SD or HD?
There are numerous ways to do this and they vary in both cost and image quality, you can watch in full HD or via an RF channel. HD is clearly the better option but at present is still expensive compared to simply having Virgin multi-room setup, with the benefit of every room having its own set top box (STB) and independent channel viewing.
So this blog post will focus on viewing one virgin media box in SD around the home.
TV cabling required
At every point you wish to view TV you need a coax cable or TV aerial cable, hopefully they are already present from a previous Sky installation or from just watching freeview via the TV aerial.
Using these pre-installed TV aerial coax cables we need to inject the currently viewed Virgin channel as a radio frequency (RF)
The rear of the Virgin Media box does not have an RF output as the majority of Sky boxes do, so we need to create this. The hardware required is called an “RF modulator” the best one we use is the Triax Tri-link normally available for around £50 its not the cheapest but seems to provide the best connectivity and includes a magic eye.
Connecting the Triax Tri-link
The Triax tri-link is connected to the Virgin Media box by Scart lead, the TV aerial feed input is connected using “f connectors” and the output is then sent to the the 2nd TV. If multiple view locations are required a distribution amplifier needs to be installed with “IR Pass” to allow control of the Virgin Media box. The Triax Tri-Link includes a power supply unit that screws in via F connector.
Tuning the TVs
Once all the connections are made make sure the Virgin Media STB is turned on and carry out a new installation on the TVs the Virgin Media picture will be available to view via the TVs built in analogue tuner and Freeview TV is viewable on the digital TV tuner. You can quickly switch between these two using that TVs remote control.
